I guess the question is, &#8220;What is Networking?&#8221; Essentially networking is the skill of developing or building a relationship with people that you do not know. The art of networking is to develop your own network which is simply a group of people in which you can share your ideas, information, your resources plus you can introduce your network members with each other to help each of your network members towards a common goal.</p>
<p>In the book, Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill talks about building your network into your Mastermind Group which is simply a refined network that will help you in your path towards obscene wealth and success. There are many examples of people in the book Think and Grow Rich that built their own networks to help them achieve the success they are looking for.<br />
<span id="more-9"></span><br />
In the chapter, Desire, Napoleon Hill talked about how Edwin C Barnes had the Desire to become a business partner of Thomas A Edison. He achieved his objective by building a network that helped him get to the point where he was an equal and become the partner of Thomas Edison.</p>
<p>Knowing where and how to start building your network is the toughest challenge. Below I have set out four basic steps as part of your Networking Plan.</p>
<p>Step 1. Define Your Desire</p>
<p>Napoleon Hill teaches us in Think and Grow Rich that you can only achieve what you truly Desire and this is also true of networking. What is your desire of building your network and the people in your network?</p>
<p>For example your Desire of your network might be to build a network of like minded businesses, for instance you might be a builder and your network you want to build might include painters, decorators, architects, Loan specialists etc. The Desire of your network maybe to bring 60% of your business from your network.</p>
<p>Essentially what you must do when starting to build your network is to identify what you Desire your network to be. Make sure that you write out your Desire at the top of the page so that you can easily visualize what your Desire is.</p>
<p>Step 2. Set Out Your Goals</p>
<p>Once you have a clear Desire, your next step is to define the goals of that desire. Earlier I gave you the example of a network that you might desire as a builder. The desire of the builders&#8217; network was to have painters, decorators, architects, loan specialists in the network. In the goals section of this four step process you must identify specific targets.</p>
<p>In Napoleon Hills chapter, Autosuggestion he states that for you to achieve your Desire it must be something that you can see as tangible. Simply having the desire to be Rich will never allow you to achieve anything, but having the desire to make $400,000 Cash is a tangible desire and goal you can achieve. The same is true of networking.</p>
<p>If you are building your network, you need to state in your goals specifically which painters, decorators and architects you want to be apart of your network. You should write those tangible goals down because these are the people you want to build your plan around to achieve your network.</p>
<p>Step 3. Develop Your Plan</p>
<p>The third step in your Networking Plan is to work out how you are going to network with these Target people. Your plan must involve a lot of research to identify where they spend their time and how you are going to meet them in a networking environment.</p>
<p>For example, your target architect maybe a member of Rotary so your plan that you are developing maybe to find a way through your current network to join the same Rotary Group that your target architect is a member of. In your plan you may identify that you will go to four meetings and introduce yourself four times before asking to have coffee with this person or to meet at some other function to get to know them more intimately.</p>
<p>Before you set those meetings into stone you need to do some research on their business but also the right questions to ask them. Remember the key to being a Master Networker is to make the target feel important and ask them about their business. It should not be your agenda to push your business down their throat. You will find that after a period they will naturally ask you about yours and when that situation arises it is your turn to introduce your business.</p>
<p>One of the other tasks that I recommend that you as part of this step is to practice the delivery of your questions. I also recommend that you commit your questions to memory before meeting with these Target people. The reason you should do this practice is to ensure that your delivery of the questions is natural rather than being staged. I strongly encourage you to ask a colleague to help you master these questions and to practice how you deliver them during a networking function.</p>
<p>Step 4. Implement Your Plan</p>
<p>Once you have developed your plan, the final phase is to implement your plan and to get out and start meeting the people you want to make apart of your network.</p>
<p>The bottom line is this, networking is a skill and like any skill it will take time to practice and that is why you must follow the four step process. Remember, elite swimmers do not win Olympic gold without a clear plan and a lot of practice and networking is no different. To finish off I want to simply outline the four steps in your networking plan.</p>

The key to building this group is to be able to network with your business associates, those you know and those you don&#8217;t. There are ten questions you can use to start a conversation to learn about a person you may have not have met yet in your path to see if they are worthy of your mastermind group.<span id="more-8"></span></p>

</em></strong><br />
Everybody loves to tell their story and this question really opens the door for them to talk about them and their business. Unlike when we were younger, in business we must talk about our business to survive or no one will know who you are.</p>
<p><em><strong>Q2. What is it that you enjoy about your position and your career in this industry?</strong></em></p>
<p>One of two things will happen with this question. They will either whine and winge about their role or business or alternatively they will tell you every positive thing that has happened.</p>
<p><em><strong>Q3. How do you distinguish your company for your competitors?</strong></em></p>
<p>This is the chance for the person you are talking to, to give you an advert on their business. To share with you why they are the leaders in their industry and what makes them different to all their other competitors.</p>
<p><em><strong>Q4. How do you promote your business to your customers?</strong></em></p>
<p>Learning how they promote their business to their customers may in fact open an opportunity for you to both work together in marketing each of your business. You may also pickup hints and tips to market your own business. The key role in business is to find ways to expand your sphere of influence and learning how they promote their business may enable you to use that technique to market your own. You may also be able to refer them to a colleague who would be interested in working with them. This will earn you a reputation as a powerful source of information and influence.</p>
<p><em><strong>Q5. How has your industry evolved over the years? What changes have you seen?</strong></em></p>
<p>Learning how their industry has changed helps you see how long they have been in business and their understanding of their industry. Most people will have a tendency to throw facts and figures your way which may help you or they expand both of your businesses or maybe there is a way to work together.</p>
<p><em><strong>Q6. What new trends and opportunities do you see evolving in your industry?</strong></em></p>
<p>No industry stays stagnant and there are always new trends and opportunities emerging. This is once again your opportunity to learn about their industry but also the chance for you to find new opportunities for your business.</p>
<p><em><strong>Q7. If someone wanted to enter your industry what advice could you share with them?<br />
</strong></em><br />
This question is about seeing if they are prepared to share. This question is designed to help you work out how easy they are prepared to help those around them and those they do not know. This in turn teaches you about their character.</p>
<p><em><strong>Q8. Can You Share with Me, a Memorable incident that has occurred in your business?<br />
</strong></em><br />
Everyone has heartwarming and good will stories that they want to share. This gives you a chance to learn what they consider an important and memorable moment. It helps you learn more about them and what they consider important.</p>
<p><em><strong>Q9. If you new that there was no chance of failure, what would you do with your business?</strong></em></p>
<p>Opportunities in business can come from anywhere and at anytime. The key advantage of this question is to look for opportunity. You may find an opportunity to help someone to make their goals a reality or through your networking you may be able to facilitate the person achieving their goals and in the long make some money for yourself.</p>
<p><em><strong>Q10. How would your customers describe the way you do business?</strong></em></p>
<p>This question gives the person you are talking to the opportunity to share with you positive stories from customers on how they have helped them in the past. This is your chance to learn more and more about your networking partner.</p>
<p>The ten questions I have outlined in this article are designed to help you learn about the person you are networking with. These questions are designed to help you learn about their character and whether they will be a powerful member of your mastermind group.</p>
<p>Look, remembering these questions can be a little challenging especially if you are in a highly stressful networking environment or meeting place. My recommendation to you is to copy these questions onto a small card and laminate the card. The card should be the size of your business cards and they should fit into your wallet. If you ever forget any of the questions you can always pull it out of your wallet as a quick refresher. An easy way to do this is to simply excuse yourself to go to the bathroom and discretely review the questions in the bathroom.</p>
<p>To finish off I want to reiterate the ten questions to help you start a conversation in a networking environment:</p>

<p>To do this, you first need to provide something of value, something relevant to your field or business that will generate interest among your peers. Arm yourself with research before you attend an important conference, so you&#8217;re ready with a well informed and researched presentation. Or if you are a member of your professional association, or the Rotary Club, for instance, plan to speak in public. This will a long way to demonstrate that keep up-to-date with current developments in your field and reinforce the perception that you are valuable asset in any organization or project.<span id="more-7"></span><br />
From a business perspective, it is important to connect to and seek out other professionals involved in your field, or in your town. This is in no way to suggest that you forge friendships solely to further your business interests. Only that meeting relevant people is part of your professional networking plan.</p>
<p>A relevant person is one that you have a mutual interest contacting, based on the way your professional world operates. If your professional world is on a more local level, this probably means something different than if you are interested in creating contacts in your specific business field.</p>
<p>Few of the ways to find these relevant people involve religiously looking through the newspapers to identify the key players. Be on an alert during conversations, as a name that could be of use might just crop up. You might just also ask people who you think can help you with these names.</p>
<p>The next step is to contact relevant persons individually. This is usually best done in writing. Send a brief letter about your company or your work, and ask for suggestions. Make sure you can express specifically what you liked about something you saw from this person, and let her or him know you would be interested in meeting at a specific conference or group meeting.</p>
<p>Do not try to be cute or self-depreciating. Also, do not flatter the person or gush about how great they are. Keep the communication to the point and professional. Additionally, do not write in a way that seems to demand a response. Be sure to phrase your letter in such a way that lets the person know you would appreciate some insight or a meeting, so long as it is not an inconvenience. And do not take it personally if you do not receive a response. Most of the time it just means that the person is swamped. You can be polite and introduce yourself if you see him or her at a conference or meeting down the road.</p>
<p>One-on-one meetings are a great way to get the ball rolling. When you&#8217;re next at a conference, just go up and introduce yourself to a relevant contact. If you send your introductory letter first, it will make talking that much easier. Meeting people in these face-to-face encounters helps you in your network-building, and puts you in the public eye. So people always remember you, what you do and who you are. Especially when you follow up, when you connect to keep communications open with others, they will respond. And help you build a rich and successful network.</p>
